In a collaborative effort to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ECOMIG and the Gambian Defence and Security Forces (GDSF) have launched an awareness campaign. The initiative began with a route march through Greater Banjul on October 4, 2024, followed by an official ceremony at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The event was attended by dignitaries from the ECOWAS Permanent Mission, ECOMIG, and GDSF.
The campaign's objective is to raise awareness about breast cancer in the Gambia, where the disease has a significant mortality rate of 50%. Major Eunice Holman of ECOMIG, co-chair of the planning committee, opened the event with welcome remarks. Her Excellency Miatta Lily French, Head of Mission (HoM) for ECOMIG, also addressed attendees.
A medical officer from NIGCOY 9 serving with ECOMIG provided an informative lecture on breast cancer. Demonstrations on self-breast examination were conducted in English, Wolof, and Mandinka by volunteers from NIGCOY, the Gambia Police Force, and the Gambia Fire Department.
Throughout October, various activities including sensitization programs and screenings will be held for GDSF personnel as well as communities in Bakau, Yundum, Brikama, Barra, and Kanfenda.
