President Adama Barrow delivered a speech at the Gambia Revenue Authority's (GRA) seventh Annual Taxpayers' Award Ceremony. The event, held at the Coco Ocean Resort and Spa, highlighted the importance of taxpayer contributions to national development.

The ceremony recognizes and honors the essential role of taxpayers in The Gambia, a country described by President Barrow as having a tax-based economy with limited natural resources to fund development programs. "Your contributions, large and small, are the lifeblood that sustains our progress," Barrow stated.

President Barrow emphasized the government's commitment to efficiently utilizing tax revenues for public works and services benefiting the Gambian populace. He noted the significance of the Domestic Revenue Mobilisation drive amidst reduced overseas development assistance. "We must build the requisite capacity to finance our development agenda," said Barrow.

Since President Barrow's administration began, tax revenue increased significantly from GMD 7.9 billion in 2017 to D20.83 billion in 2024, marking an increase of approximately 163%. The government projects further growth in tax revenue, aiming for GRA to collect 23 billion Dalasis this year.

Barrow attributed these results to various policy and strategy implementations aimed at bolstering revenue generation, particularly through the digitalisation of the tax system. "These figures speak for themselves! They demonstrate the collective commitment of the Gambian people to building a self-reliant and prosperous nation," he remarked.

Acknowledging the efforts of GRA, Barrow commended its Commissioner General, Mr. Yankuba Darboe, for commitment to reforming and digitalising tax processes. He praised the dedication of the GRA's staff, attributing the success of the Domestic Revenue Mobilisation drive to their hard work.

Barrow also acknowledged taxpayers' contributions, stating that their compliance underpins economic growth. He assured the business community of the government's dedication to fostering a conducive business environment, highlighting the importance of a thriving private sector for sustainable growth and job creation. "Whenever the need arises, the Government will intervene to ease any unnecessary burden," Barrow assured.

President Barrow concluded by expressing gratitude for the support and dedication to the country, encouraging continued progress for a brighter future.
