The European Union (EU) is engaging with the ECOWAS Commission's Department of Political Affairs Peace and Security (PAPS) to better understand the political and security dynamics of the West African region and to explore avenues for increased collaboration.

EU's External Action Service was represented by Mr. Cosmin Dobran, Director of Peace, Partnership and Crisis Management. On April 14, 2025, he led a delegation to Abuja, Nigeria, to receive an update from the Commission concerning peace, security, the fight against terrorism, and potential partnerships to bolster regional political stability.

Dr. Cyriaque Agnekethom, the ECOWAS Commission’s Director of Peace-keeping and Regional Security, expressed ongoing concern over regional security threats. "ECOWAS remains concerned by security threats facing the region." He emphasized a comprehensive approach to peace and security, including addressing terrorism, maritime security, Illegal Unreported and Unregulated fishing, money laundering, and terrorism financing. He underlined ECOWAS's commitment to democratic values and good governance, despite challenges such as unconstitutional government changes and the exit of three member states. Dr. Agnekethom stressed the importance of enhanced intelligence sharing in the borderless fight against terrorism.

Dr. Brown Odigie, a mediation officer in the Directorate of Political Affairs, provided the EU delegation with updates on preventive diplomacy, mediation, and peace-building efforts in the region, emphasizing areas with potential for cooperation.

Additionally, ongoing consultations were mentioned concerning a special summit focused on the future of regional integration in West Africa.
