The ECOWAS Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU), alongside the ECOWAS Directorate for the Digital Economy and Postal Services, hosted a workshop in Accra, Ghana, from April 14 to 16, 2025. The objective was to review the draft final report on the feasibility of establishing a Regional Internet Exchange Point (RIXP).

The plan to establish an RIXP aims to optimize Internet traffic within the region, reducing reliance on international data routes. The initiative is expected to support digital projects by promoting the essential role RIXPs play in various regional economic strategies, including affordable roaming, the regional customs network, and an ECOWAS e-commerce strategy.

Another goal of this project is to fortify and drive the growth of existing Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across member states, thus enhancing regional Internet resilience.

The event commenced with a welcome address delivered on behalf of Mr. Douka Sediko, ECOWAS Commissioner in charge of Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalization. The address was given by Mrs. Folake Olagunju, Acting Director of Digital Economy and Post.

Officially opening the workshop on April 14, 2025, Mr. Emmanuel Ofori, Director of Innovations, represented Honourable Samuel George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technologies and Innovations of Ghana.
