The ECOWAS Commission hosted the second meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS Member States on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting was officially opened by H.E. Dr. Alieu Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and H.E. Ambassador Musa Sanu Nuhu, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ECOWAS.

This gathering, which brings together Ambassadors from ECOWAS Member States accredited to the Commission, precedes the statutory meetings of ECOWAS. Its purpose is to enable these representatives to examine and review various issues that will be submitted to the ECOWAS Council of Ministers next week.

Several topics are on the agenda for this second meeting. These include a report on the state of the community addressing issues related to the functioning of the Commission, Parliament, Court of Justice, GIABA (Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa), and WAHO (West African Health Organization). Additionally, there will be presentations on the implementation status of recommendations from the last Council of Ministers meeting; a memorandum on social protection ministers' final working report; and another memorandum on implementing the trade liberalization scheme in West Africa.

Participants will also discuss other matters and proposals concerning the future and reform of ECOWAS.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the ECOWAS Commission to address security and peace issues as a prelude to next week's Meeting of Ministers on Mediation and Security in West Africa in Abuja.
