ECOWAS honors staff contributions at Abuja ceremony

The ECOWAS Commission recently held an event at its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, to honor 57 staff members for their significant contributions to the community's development. The ceremony took place on February 25, 2025, and featured presentations of goodwill messages and recognition of retirees from the year 2025 as well as awards from the 2024 ECOWAS Staff Award Programme.

Prominent figures present included H.E. Dr. Omar ALIEU Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission; H.E. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, Vice President; Mr. Joao Alage Mamadu FADIA, Auditor General of the ECOWAS Institutions; and Prof. Nazifi Darma Abdullahi, Commissioner of Internal Services.

Awards were presented to various staff members by these leaders: 17 retirees were honored along with 12 personnel recognized for long service and 28 drivers who had driven for over 15 years without any accidents.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Omar ALIEU Touray expressed gratitude towards all ECOWAS personnel for their roles in advancing the commission's goals despite challenges faced by the community. He stated: “I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of you members of staff who partook in doing the tremendous work of bringing the community to where it is at today.” He acknowledged progress in areas such as trade and infrastructure while noting that overcoming challenges strengthens the community.

Prof. Nazifi Abdullahi Darma emphasized that this event was not only an honor but also a recognition of the sacrifices made by dedicated staff: “ECOWAS is celebrating its 50TH anniversary this year...as they retire, it is important to honour their exceptional service.”

Vice President Damtien L. Tchintchibidja concluded by stressing the importance of fostering a culture of recognition within ECOWAS: “This yearly occasion honours the important contributions of departing staff while also providing an opportunity to motivate the upcoming generation...”
