New leadership of ECOWAS Court meets with President Touray in Abuja

The new leadership of the ECOWAS Court of Justice visited H.E. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, at the Commission's headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, on October 17, 2024. The newly elected President and Vice President of the Court are Honorable Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves from Cabo Verde and Honorable Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma from Sierra Leone. They were elected on October 14, 2024.

Justice Gonçalves delivered his inaugural speech, highlighting his vision for the Court based on responsibility and dialogue. He underscored the importance of adhering to the responsibilities defined by ECOWAS laws that establish the Court. He also emphasized maintaining the institution's mission as an independent, reliable, efficient, and accessible court.

Justice Gonçalves committed to fostering ongoing dialogue with other ECOWAS institutions and agencies, member states, civil societies, among others. He also mentioned ensuring financial prudence in managing the institution's funds.

President Touray welcomed the new leadership team and extended warm congratulations to them. He assured them of the ECOWAS Commission's support for their success as heads of this key community institution.
