In a recent development aimed at boosting integration and trade, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), with support from the African Development Bank, have completed equipping the Ekok/Mfum Joint Border Post between Nigeria and Cameroon. This initiative is part of the broader Nigeria-Cameroon Multinational Highway and Transport Facilitation Programme.

The modernized Joint Border Post was officially handed over to Nigerian and Cameroonian border officials in November 2022. It is now fully equipped with a cargo scanner, baggage and walkthrough metal detectors, and a weighbridge station to ensure efficient operations. Additionally, border officials from customs, plant quarantine, immigration, among others, have received training on using this new equipment.

"The security scanner when effectively utilized will assist border officials with a more efficient means to examine and screen cargos along the corridor," noted an official statement. This upgrade aims to reduce processing time while enhancing goods security. Similarly, the weighbridge plays a crucial role for customs by checking truck weights to prevent excessive loading. This measure is intended "with the sole aim of saving the huge investment on road infrastructure from deteriorating."
