In April 2022, the General Hospital launched a significant improvement project to address various operational issues. Funded by ring-fenced financial aid, this initiative focused on several key areas:

The morgue underwent a complete refurbishment, enhancing capacity and hygiene standards. Additionally, a more accessible Chapel of Rest was constructed to better serve families. A new and efficient hot water system was installed to ensure consistent access throughout the hospital. Furthermore, a crucial backup power system was implemented to safeguard vital equipment during power outages. The project successfully met its goals within budget and has notably improved services for both patients and staff.

The project's primary objectives included ensuring consistent and reliable service delivery to the public, safeguarding valuable hospital equipment, and generating long-term operational cost savings.

Following a competitive tendering process in early 2023, AMD Engineering secured the contract to transform a former medical storage area into a modern mortuary with an adjoining Chapel of Rest. The project reached official completion in March 2024, with the mortuary partially operational since November 2023 and the Chapel of Rest fully operational by April 2024. Key improvements include:

- A new body chiller with a capacity for six bariatric-sized bodies
- An enhanced workspace for efficient mortuary operations
- Hygienic finishes and upgraded hoisting equipment
- A newly built Chapel of Rest that accommodates approximately 15 people with single-level access for improved accessibility

Henry’s Construction and Raymond Yon were awarded contracts to install a hot water system completed in March 2024. These improvements include:

- Installation of a larger combined single boiler system allowing other stand-alone boilers to be removed from the network
- A more efficient hot water system using thermal solar panels and heat pumps that are three times more efficient than typical immersion heaters
- Installation of hygienic hospital-grade long lever-handle taps
- Installation of an insulated hot water piped network supporting the new boiler while removing old end-of-life pipe systems

A new generator and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system have been installed to safeguard vital medical equipment against power instability, ensuring constant power throughout the hospital complex. SHG employed a procurement strategy focusing on acquiring longer-lead-time equipment in advance to expedite certain installation phases despite custom equipment manufacturing delays.

Commissioning of the UPS and Generator is now complete. The next step involves connecting the new wiring with the existing hospital electrical system, expected to be finished by June 2024.
