As part of a series of activities organized by the ECOWAS Representation in Ghana to mark its 49th anniversary, H.E. Ambassador Baba Gana Wakil, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, delivered a lecture at the University of Communication and Technology in Accra on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
The anniversary lecture, held in the university auditorium, was titled “ECOWAS Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” and attended by approximately 150 students. The event also featured Vice-Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Afoakwa and other faculty and academic staff.
Professor Afoakwa expressed his appreciation to ECOWAS leadership for selecting the university to host this year’s ECOWAS Day celebration in Ghana.
In his keynote address, Ambassador Baba Gana Wakil emphasized the role of communication technology in advancing digital transformation within the ECOWAS region to achieve economic prosperity. He highlighted that digital tools are increasingly relevant beyond economics, particularly in socio-political contexts where cybersecurity and data analytics play crucial roles in combating terrorism and transnational crimes.
“The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has pledged its commitment to enhance regional peace and security, with emphasis on security architecture and early warning signals,” said Ambassador Wakil.
He added that enhancing regional peace and security remains a top priority for the regional bloc given current realities. Key issues such as implementing a Regional Action Plan against land and sea banditry and terrorism, operationalizing the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF), and focusing on Regional Mediators like the ECOWAS Committee of the Wise were discussed.
The program aimed to educate and engage university students on the importance of communication technology in achieving ECOWAS objectives.
