Last week, the Royal Engineer Lead Air Support Team visited St Helena and conducted a comprehensive survey of the airport runway. The survey confirmed the runway remains in excellent condition, and the team also provided capacity building and support to airport staff.

Building on this visit, the Royal Air Force (RAF) has identified an opportunity to showcase its capabilities. An A400M military transport aircraft will conduct a training flight between St Helena and the Falkland Islands from Sunday, June 2 to Monday, June 3, 2024.

This mission provides valuable training for the RAF and will confirm the route in case St Helena ever needs humanitarian support or if short landing or take-off capability is required.

While on the island, the visiting team aims to experience St Helena’s natural wonders and spend time meeting local youth. Beyond their training mission, the RAF is committed to engaging with the community. To foster connection, they will host a special visit for children of all ages at St Helena Airport on Sunday, June 2 from 13:00 to 15:00.

Parents wishing for their children to participate can register by contacting Stephen Thwaites at stephen.thwaites@fcdo.gov.uk. It should be noted that children must be accompanied by an adult and transportation to the airport is not provided.
