The ECOWAS Commission and the Arab Republic of Egypt are exploring possibilities for enhanced cooperation in peace and security to promote stability in West Africa. This initiative was highlighted during a courtesy call by Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, H.E. Mohamed Fouad, on ECOWAS Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musa, on May 16, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria.

Commissioner Musa emphasized the need for collaboration in operationalizing the ECOWAS counter-terrorism force. He mentioned that plans are underway to convene a special summit on regional integration while working diligently to prevent heightened geopolitical interests from leading to proxy wars.

"ECOWAS has a lot to learn from Egypt on regional peace consolidation," stated Commissioner Musa. He added that ECOWAS opposes Member States' withdrawal from the Community as it contradicts principles of integration and pan-Africanism.

The Commissioner expressed interest in how Egypt could support addressing the dynamics in Libya to ensure Sahel's safety, noting its significant impact on current peace and security conditions.

Ambassador Fouad recognized ECOWAS as the most successful regional economic community in Africa. Despite Egypt not being part of West Africa, he acknowledged the importance of proximity between border areas of West Africa and the Maghreb.

Egypt is committed to a comprehensive approach towards terrorism, cross-border crimes, insecurity, and insurgencies. Ambassador Fouad noted that cooperation with ECOWAS is based on mutual understanding and shared needs for capacity building and information exchange. Both parties expressed optimism about leveraging Egypt's experiences for regional peacekeeping, mediation, and integration efforts within ECOWAS.
