On May 9, 2024, the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) conducted a validation workshop for its 2023-2027 Gender Mainstreaming Strategy and Action Plan Report in Praia. The workshop was part of the Program Promoting a Climate-friendly Energy Market in West Africa (ProCEM-II), supported by GIZ.
The event brought together all ECREEE staff and a delegation from the ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CDCG), led by its Director and the Gender focal point of the ROGEAP project. The main objective of the workshop was to validate ECREEE’s 2023-2027 Gender Strategy and Action Plan among key stakeholders, including experts and advocates in renewable energy and gender equality fields. It also aimed to promote awareness and train ECREEE and Gender Focal Point staff.
During the opening ceremony, Mr. Francis Sempore, Executive Director of ECREEE, highlighted the significance of integrating gender considerations into energy policies and projects. He underscored that gender equality is not merely a social justice issue but also crucial for achieving sustainable development and maximizing the impact of renewable energy initiatives.
Mrs. Sandra Oulate, Director of CDCG, expressed her Centre's full commitment to supporting ECREEE in implementing its Gender Mainstreaming Strategy and Action Plan at the regional level. She noted that this document embodies ECOWAS's commitment to promoting gender-sensitive policies and initiatives.
The workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to offer valuable insights, feedback, and recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of the Gender Mainstreaming Strategy. Participants engaged in robust discussions, sharing best practices, success stories, and innovative approaches towards advancing gender equality within the renewable energy sector.
A report was pre-approved by National Gender-Energy Focal Points from Ministries of Energy across ECOWAS Member States during an online workshop held on May 8, 2024.
