The Community Nursing and Health Promotion teams are preparing to host an informational stall at the Canister in Jamestown on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 10:00 to 13:00. The event is part of a broader effort to raise awareness for World Hypertension Day, which this year carries the theme 'Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer'.

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a condition characterized by the excessive force of blood against artery walls. The World Health Organization defines hypertension as having a reading of 130/80 mmHg or higher. If left untreated, hypertension can lead to severe health complications.

One of the challenges with hypertension is that it typically presents no symptoms until it has caused significant damage. It notably increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease among other health problems.

To manage blood pressure effectively, individuals are advised to:

- Get regular check-ups and have their blood pressure measured
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Follow a balanced diet low in salt
- Engage in regular exercise
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Refrain from smoking
- Take medication as prescribed by a healthcare professional

The teams invite everyone to visit their stall or get in touch directly for more information about hypertension, its prevention strategies and control measures.
