The ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Professor Fatou SOW SARR, recently addressed the press at the Commission's Headquarters in Abuja, focusing on the organization's efforts in the humanitarian field and youth development. Professor SARR emphasized the importance of ECOWAS policies in these areas, stating that "each of the components works for the development of the Community through regional policies that take into account sectors such as gender, education, youth and humanitarian aid."

Regarding humanitarian issues, the ECOWAS Commission has been actively providing support to Member States and affected populations in times of need. The Directorate of Humanitarian Affairs has allocated financial resources to manage crises such as floods and migration challenges. In 2024, over $9 million was made available for internally displaced persons, refugees, and host communities, with specific assistance provided to countries like Guinea during emergencies like the fire at the oil depot and floods.

In efforts to stabilize the region and combat terrorism, ECOWAS has extended financial support to countries like Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso for rehabilitation and community resilience building. Additionally, the establishment of an Observation, Monitoring, and Early Warning Centre in Abuja has been instrumental in preventing violent extremism and ensuring that humanitarian issues are effectively addressed in the region.

On the youth development front, the ECOWAS Youth and Sport Development Centre has been implementing policies to promote youth engagement, sports, and volunteering. The Directorate has facilitated the deployment of volunteers to Member States and supported sports federations with annual loans. Furthermore, initiatives such as vocational training programs in fields like refrigeration, air conditioning, and electrician training have been launched to enhance the socio-economic integration of young people in countries like Burkina Faso and Mali.

The Education Directorate within ECOWAS has been actively involved in promoting academic mobility and professional integration programs for young people across the region. The organization has supported the training of hundreds of young individuals and facilitated partnerships with countries like China to fund youth projects. Moreover, ECOWAS has been nurturing talent in the cultural sector by recognizing artists at prestigious festivals like FESPACO in Burkina Faso and MASA in Côte d’Ivoire.

ECOWAS's multifaceted approach to humanitarian aid, youth development, and cultural promotion underscores its commitment to fostering regional integration and supporting the well-being of communities across West Africa.
