The African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) is partnering with Benin to improve the management of the country's mining sector from Monday to Jan. 29 in Dakar, Senegal.
ALSF officials will review sample mining contracts with representatives of various state ministries, discuss their finer points and present effective strategies for negotiating the contracts. As more international companies negotiate deals for harvesting Africa's natural resources, ALSF officials said they were holding the training to increase the competence and acumen of Africans participating in those conversations.
“We are conducting this workshop so that we can equip officials with skills to advise and represent their governments in future negotiations," Principal Legal Counsel of the ALSF Maude Vallée said. "We want more African experts involved in the negotiation of complex commercial transactions."
ALSF officials said the training was just one of several ongoing interventions meant to bolster African competence in negotiation and litigation.
The ALSF is a division of the African Development Bank Group and exists to provide legal counsel, resources and training to African states on development issues.
