Recent developments concerning the sale of assets linked to former President Yahya Jammeh have stirred public concern in The Gambia. In response, President Adama Barrow addressed the nation to clarify the situation and reassure citizens.
President Barrow recalled that the Janneh Commission of Inquiry, initiated under his administration, concluded its work in March 2019. Its findings led to a Government White Paper in September 2019, which he endorsed for transparency and accountability.
In May 2019, based on recommendations from the Justice Ministry, President Barrow authorized a Ministerial Taskforce to oversee the lawful disposal of these assets. This Taskforce has been reporting regularly to the Cabinet.
The Ministry of Justice disclosed that some transactions involving livestock, tractors, vehicles, and other valuables occurred during the Commission's proceedings. Upon learning about these sales recently, President Barrow convened an urgent Cabinet meeting on May 13th, 2025.
While initially considering an independent investigative panel, President Barrow emphasized collaboration with existing bodies like the National Assembly and National Audit Office. Both are conducting inquiries into this matter.
"Their findings will be made public," stated President Barrow. "My government will enforce their recommendations to address shortcomings discovered and hold accountable any individual or entity found culpable."
He assured Gambians that recovered assets belong to them and emphasized his administration's commitment to transparency. "We are committed to full transparency in whatever we undertake on behalf of the people," he affirmed.
President Barrow urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting investigation results. He concluded by expressing hope for unity and prosperity under divine guidance.
