ECOWAS commissioner attends UN forum on forests

Commissioner Massandjé Toure Litse, representing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), participated in the 20th Ordinary Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests from May 5 to 9, 2025, in New York. As ECOWAS's Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, she reiterated the organization's commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

In her address, Toure Litse emphasized ECOWAS's efforts to strengthen regional integration in alignment with ECOWAS Vision 2050. She discussed sustainable forest management and outlined several initiatives undertaken by ECOWAS. These include the Forest Convergence Plan and Regional Programme to Combat Desertification (2013), the Forest Investment Plan (2016), and the Regional Strategy to Combat Illegal Wildlife Trafficking (2023).

During the session, Toure Litse met with Rosalie Matondo, Minister for the Forest Economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The bilateral meeting focused on sharing experiences and exploring potential collaboration opportunities within the forestry sector.

Accompanying Commissioner Toure Litse were Kinza Jawara-Njai, Permanent Observer of ECOWAS to the United Nations; Esther Oyewumi, Political Adviser; and Bazoumana Diabate, Executive Assistant to the Commissioner.
