The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) is set to take place on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Local classic and vintage motorcycle riders are invited to participate in this global event focused on men's health.
Originating in Sydney, Australia, the DGR was founded by Mark Hawwa. The event unites classic and vintage styled motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health. Inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper on a classic motorcycle wearing a suit, Hawwa envisioned this themed ride as a way to connect niche motorcycle communities while supporting men's health causes.
The DGR has become an annual occasion where elegantly dressed riders showcase their motorcycles globally. SHG encourages St Helena's eligible motorcycle owners with classic or vintage-styled bikes to register online and represent the island internationally. Spectators are welcome to attend and show support.
Interested participants can register at www.gentlemansride.com for details about the event, registration procedures, and fundraising opportunities.
The ride will start at Plantation House at 13:00, proceeding through various points including Blue Hill, Sandy Bay, Green Hill, Levelwood Shop, Longwood Avenue, Alarm Forest, Constitution Street in Jamestown, concluding at the Sea Front/Yacht Club around 18:00.
Kyle Bennett from the organizing committee on St Helena stated: "Why we ride: We ride for the friendship and camaraderie; we ride for the freedom; and we ride for our mental wellbeing. We ride for the thrill of the motorcycle and the sound of the engine."
Bennett elaborated on how riding offers moments of escape and freedom that improve overall health by calming anxious thoughts and focusing attention. He described it as an activity that synchronizes man with machine amidst nature's scenery.
