Cotonou recently hosted the second edition of the African Research and Innovation Forum (FARI 2025), an event organized as part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of ECOWAS. The forum, which took place from May 5 to May 9, focused on the theme "African Youth, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Building a Sustainable Future." It brought together political figures from Benin, young entrepreneurs, and scientists from various Member States.

The forum aimed to highlight the role of science, technology, and innovation in socio-economic development. This year's event paid particular attention to innovations by young Africans amid challenges such as irregular migration across the Sahara Desert and threats from terrorism.

During FARI 2025, prizes were awarded to three outstanding young entrepreneurs. EAZY CHAIN from Ivory Coast won the first prize of $25,000 for their innovation in maritime transport cost reduction. CODE CLUB ACADEMY from Ghana received $15,000 for developing a solution aiding visually impaired individuals. The third prize went to FESAM from Benin for creating an instant cervical cancer screening kit.

H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission, emphasized FARI's importance in his closing speech: “FARI embodies the spirit of learning, collaboration, knowledge-sharing and innovation.” He praised participants for gathering to exchange ideas for progress through innovation.

H.E. Madame Eléonore YAYI LADEKAN delivered an official address on behalf of President Patrice TALON. She highlighted that “science and technology shaped in Africa by Africans can meet local needs,” urging commitments made at FARI be translated into action.

Recommendations were made by Professor Saliou TOURE and others on improving future editions of FARI. These included fostering collaboration among young people in ECOWAS through competitions and exchange programs while strengthening regional platforms for best practice sharing.

In addition to these events, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY visited a laboratory at the University of Abomey-Calavi equipped with funds provided by ECOWAS under its African Research and Innovation Programme (ARIP).
