ECOWAS hosts workshop for Ivorian media on tackling misinformation

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has conducted a two-day workshop in Abidjan aimed at enhancing information integrity and combating misinformation and disinformation among Ivorian journalists. Held from May 13 to 14, 2025, the training sought to provide media professionals with tools and techniques to address disinformation while adhering to ethical journalism principles.

Ambassador Fanta Cissé, representing ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, emphasized the workshop's significance in empowering journalists to promote responsible journalism based on verified facts. "The media are one of the cornerstones of any prosperous democracy," she noted.

Mr. Jean-Claude Coulibaly, President of the Union des Journalistes of Côte d’Ivoire, highlighted the necessity for sound professional practices in today's hyper-information society. "Ensuring the integrity of information is not an option, but a requirement," he stated.

Dr. Maya Schmaljohann, representing Germany in Côte d’Ivoire, stressed the importance of collective action against disinformation and reiterated Germany's support for ECOWAS initiatives aimed at preserving information integrity.
