Sierra Leone appoints new youth affairs minister under president's guidance

State House, Freetown – On May 13, 2025, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio oversaw the oath-taking ceremony for Mr. Ibrahim Sannoh, who has been appointed as the new Minister of Youth Affairs in Sierra Leone. The event took place at State House and signified a renewed dedication to empowering Sierra Leone's youth through inclusive leadership.

Mr. John Sumailah, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service, stated that after Mr. Sannoh's appointment by the President, he received parliamentary approval as per Section 57 of the 1991 Constitution. He then introduced Mr. Sannoh to take his ministerial oath.

In his speech following the ceremony, Minister Ibrahim Sannoh thanked President Bio for placing trust in him. He expressed his commitment to serving with humility and determination and emphasized that his leadership would be based on openness and inclusion.

“I do not take this appointment lightly,” Minister Sannoh stated. “I am committed to serving the youth of Sierra Leone with an open-door policy, focused on empowering those who dream of a better tomorrow for our nation.”

President Bio congratulated Minister Sannoh and highlighted his extensive experience within the administration as preparation for this role. However, he also pointed out the significant challenges ahead.

“You have been part of this government for a long time, and I believe you have what it takes to deliver. But the challenges are enormous, and a lot is expected of you,” said President Bio.

The President stressed the urgency of transforming the nation by empowering its youth and assured Minister Sannoh of his full support: “As a nation, we are in a hurry to transform... We must catch up with the rest of the world in terms of empowering our youth... When in doubt or in need, do not hesitate to reach out.”

The ceremony ended with a reaffirmation from both parties about their commitment to utilizing Sierra Leone’s young population as key contributors to national development.
