ECOWAS, in partnership with Ecobank Nigeria and the World Bank, has initiated a training program for more than 50 entrepreneurs in Nigeria. The focus is on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating within the off-grid solar photovoltaic sector.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Internal Services, Professor Nazifi Abdullahi Darma, representing the President of the Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, inaugurated this capacity-building workshop in Abuja on March 10, 2025. This initiative is part of the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP) activities.
The workshop aims to equip participants with several competencies by its conclusion on March 12. These include an understanding of the ROGEAP subsidy mechanism and financing access; mastery of off-grid solar photovoltaic technology and related standards; and tools for developing business models and market expansion strategies.
An Ecobank Nigeria representative expressed the banking group's commitment to supporting this sector and enhancing collaboration with ECOWAS.
ROGEAP is funded by the World Bank, Clean Technology Fund, and Netherlands Directorate General for International Cooperation. It is implemented by ECOWAS's Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Digitization for Component 1: Developing a Regional Market for Autonomous Solar Systems. The project spans 19 countries within ECOWAS.
