Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio has been recognized with two significant African continental awards for his leadership in promoting gender equality and girl-child education. The awards, the African HeForShe Champion of the Year 2024 and the Presidential African Intelligence Award 2024, were presented by former Malawian President Dr. Joyce Banda and Princess Dr. Ocansey.

Yusuf Keketorma Sandi, the Press Secretary, highlighted that these awards are symbols of Africa’s aspiration for leadership characterized by integrity and progress. Dr. Joyce Banda praised President Bio for his efforts in empowering women and promoting gender equality, noting that only a few male leaders actively champion these causes.

Dr. Banda also commended First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio for her advocacy in advancing gender equality in Sierra Leone. She noted that President Bio’s commitment is evident through policy decisions, including appointing more women to leadership roles.

In his acceptance speech, President Bio expressed gratitude for the awards, stating they recognize his government's work in women's socio-economic empowerment and girl-child education, particularly in STEM fields. He emphasized that these honors reflect collective efforts toward fostering education and gender equality in Sierra Leone.

President Bio reiterated his administration's dedication to gender equality as a fundamental driver of national development. He mentioned several initiatives such as legislative reforms for gender inclusion, increased access to education for girls, support for women entrepreneurs, and measures against gender-based violence.

“These are not just policies; they are pathways to a more just and equitable society,” he stated. He also stressed that achieving gender equality requires the commitment of men and boys as allies.

“I dedicate this award to every girl who dares to dream beyond societal limitations," he concluded.
