Sierra Leone honors armed forces at 16th annual celebration

Parade Square in Wilberforce, Freetown, hosted the 16th Armed Forces Day celebration in Sierra Leone on February 18, 2025. President Julius Maada Bio led the nation in honoring the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). This annual event serves as a tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for the country.

Chief of Defense Staff Major General Amara Idara Bangura highlighted the importance of the day in his welcome address. He emphasized that it is a time to remember and celebrate Sierra Leone's progress in unity and patriotism. "Today, we honor the courage and dedication of all who have served in the armed forces, and we solemnly remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our nation," stated Major General Bangura.

The ceremony included a wreath-laying to honor fallen heroes, a military parade, and cultural performances. High-ranking officials, diplomats, veterans, and families of fallen soldiers attended, showing appreciation for the armed forces' service.

President Julius Maada Bio commended RSLAF's professionalism and sacrifices. He assured continued support for military personnel's welfare. "Today, we honor the legacy of bravery and patriotism that defines the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces. We owe a debt of gratitude to the heroes who laid down their lives to protect our beloved nation," said President Bio.

The event concluded with displays symbolizing Sierra Leone’s commitment to peace and development.
