His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of Liberia, addressed the 38th Ordinary Session of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In his first address as President of Liberia at the summit, he reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to justice, democracy, and unity across Africa.
President Boakai thanked the AU and the Ethiopian Government for their hospitality. He also congratulated His Excellency João Lourenço, President of Angola, on his election as Chairperson of the African Union and commended Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat for his leadership as outgoing Chairperson.
Discussing the AU's theme for 2025, "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations," President Boakai joined other leaders in advocating reparations to address slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism's legacies. "Liberia firmly believes in the importance of reparations as a critical first step toward addressing the lasting legacy and impacts of these historical injustices," said President Boakai. He emphasized that Liberia is naturally positioned to advocate for reparations due to its founding by freed slaves.
President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s role in promoting justice and reconciliation, suggesting that reparations could enhance unity across Africa and its diaspora. He expressed appreciation for AU support during Liberia's 2023 elections that maintained democratic stability.
Furthermore, he welcomed AU endorsement for Liberia's candidacy for a non-permanent United Nations Security Council seat (2026-2027). He urged continued backing on key priorities like peace, security, youth empowerment, and economic development.
President Boakai shared his Administration’s ARREST Agenda—focusing on Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism—outlining plans for inclusive development. He confirmed Liberia’s commitment to collaborating with AU members to foster a prosperous continent.
“Liberia will remain an active and committed partner in advancing the Union’s agenda for a stronger and more prosperous Africa,” stated President Boakai.
