The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Hidayet Bayraktar, concluded his mission with a farewell visit to Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission. The meeting took place on February 10, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.
During the visit, Bayraktar expressed gratitude for the cooperation between Turkey and ECOWAS. He thanked Dr. Touray for his efforts in strengthening this partnership and invited him to an event scheduled in Antalya, Turkey later this year.
Discussions also covered regional security issues such as insecurity and terrorism within the ECOWAS region. Both parties explored potential solutions to these challenges. Bayraktar reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to supporting ECOWAS in addressing community challenges and promoting peace and stability in West Africa.
Dr. Touray acknowledged Bayraktar's dedication and support during his tenure. He praised Turkey's role in West Africa's development and highlighted various initiatives aimed at combating regional insecurity.
“ECOWAS’s major challenge is insecurity, and none of its member states can face it alone," stated Dr. Touray. "If we are not united, we cannot combat this threat. Unity and collective collaboration are essential to preserve peace and stability in West Africa.”
He encouraged continued Turkish support for peace efforts in the region.
Dr. Touray was joined by Abdou Kolley, his Director of Cabinet, while Bayraktar was accompanied by his deputy Ms Elif Durdu.
