President Barrow opens Gambia's legal year with focus on justice reform

The President of the Republic of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, addressed the opening ceremony of the 2025 Legal Year in Banjul on February 9, 2025. He emphasized the importance of justice and governance in strengthening democracy.

Barrow acknowledged the Judiciary's efforts to enhance access to justice and efficiency. "I extend hearty congratulations to the Judiciary of The Gambia, ably led by the Lord Chief Justice, Honourable Hassan B. Jallow," he stated.

He highlighted recent advancements such as new court reporting tools aimed at expediting justice delivery. "Adopting new state-of-the-art technology has modernised our justice system," Barrow remarked.

Barrow also praised initiatives empowering district tribunals and educating communities about legal matters. "These initiatives are making a substantial difference, particularly for those in rural areas," he said.

Discussing transitional justice, Barrow mentioned steps taken since releasing a White Paper in 2022. "The decision to establish a Special Prosecutor’s Office and a Special Tribunal underscores our determination to address past injustices," he noted.

A significant development is ECOWAS's approval to establish a Special Tribunal investigating human rights violations from July 1994 to January 2017. "It is meant to send a strong message that impunity will not be condoned on our shores," Barrow affirmed.

He also highlighted ongoing security sector reforms aligning with human rights principles. "We are proud of the progress made in aligning our security services with the principles of the rule of law and human rights," Barrow commented.

Barrow recognized international partners' roles in supporting these reforms, emphasizing collaboration's importance. "Their collaboration with us is helping to maintain a just democratic society," he added.

He concluded by expressing gratitude for the Judiciary's dedication: "Our successes would not have been possible without the Judiciary’s unwavering dedication."

Barrow officially declared the 2025 Legal Year open, wishing all involved a successful year ahead.
