India seeks stronger ties with ECOWAS during high-level meeting

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Indian High Commission to Nigeria, Ms. Vartika Rawat, met with Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, on February 6, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between India and ECOWAS.

During their discussion, they addressed economic and trade cooperation, capacity building, and investment as potential solutions to insecurity in the ECOWAS region. Ms. Rawat emphasized the strong existing cooperation between India and ECOWAS and advocated for its enhancement.

Ms. Rawat also highlighted plans to sign a memorandum of understanding between India and ECOWAS to further solidify their cooperative relationship. Dr. Touray echoed her sentiments, expressing a desire for new areas of partnership exploration in the future.

Dr. Touray underscored that partnerships with ECOWAS should prioritize unity and security in West Africa. He stated: “Our partners must help us preserve peace and unity, and promote development in our community. They must help us to unite and come together rather than divide us.”

At the conclusion of their meeting, Dr. Touray received a gift from Ms. Rawat. He was accompanied by Abdou Kolley, his Director of Cabinet, and Jérôme Boa, Director of External Relations at the ECOWAS Commission.
