The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger from the organization became effective on January 29, 2025. Despite this development, ECOWAS emphasizes regional solidarity and aims to minimize disruptions for citizens and businesses.
In a statement, ECOWAS requested that all relevant authorities continue to recognize national passports and identity cards with the ECOWAS logo held by citizens from these three countries. The statement also urged authorities to maintain current trade practices under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.
Additionally, it was stated that citizens from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger should retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment as per existing ECOWAS protocols. Furthermore, full support is requested for ECOWAS officials from these nations in carrying out their duties.
These measures are intended to remain in place until further notice while discussions are underway regarding future engagement between ECOWAS and the three countries. "The Commission has set up a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries," said an official statement.
This approach aims to prevent confusion and ensure continuity during this transition period for affected individuals and enterprises within the region.
