The St Helena Government (SHG) has formalized a contract with Jeremy Benn Associates Ltd (JBA) to create a Water Resource Management Plan (WRMP) for the island. This initiative aims to enhance the management of water resources and bolster St Helena's resilience against climate change.
The project is included in the £30 million Economic Development Investment Programme (EDIP), funded by the UK Government. JBA consultants will visit St Helena for a week starting March 1, 2025, to gather data and evaluate water resource needs. They will employ specific methodologies suited to the island's challenges, which will inform the WRMP. Their strategy involves data analysis, water resource modeling, planning, and extensive stakeholder engagement to develop an actionable plan for St Helena.
In 2020, SHG approved the Water Resources Strategy 2020-2050. This strategy aims to ensure adequate, safe, and affordable water for the island's population. The WRMP is crucial in achieving this goal by balancing water supply and demand while supporting health, economic activity, food security, and environmental sustainability.
The WRMP will be developed over 12 months in 2025 with an expected completion by year-end. After their initial visit in March 2025, further consultations are planned. The public will have opportunities to provide feedback as the project progresses.
