ECOWAS prepares for Liberia's presidential runoff election

Prof. Attahiru Jega, head of the ECOWAS Electoral Observation Mission, arrived in Monrovia, Liberia on November 9, 2023. He met with various stakeholders involved in the upcoming Presidential Runoff Election scheduled for November 14, 2023.

On November 10, Prof. Jega held meetings with Mr. Frank Musa Dean Jr., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Liberia; Mrs. Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, President of the National Electoral Commission (NEC); civil society actors; and the ECOWAS Technical Team. Discussions focused on preparations for a peaceful and credible electoral process.

The following day, Prof. Jega met with ECOWAS Short-Term Observers alongside Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security; Mr. Abdou Kolley, Director of the Cabinet of the President of the ECOWAS Commission; Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Liberia; members of ECOWAS Parliament; and other officials.

Prof. Jega urged observers to adhere to legal frameworks and international standards without interfering in the process. He emphasized using their training skills effectively and encouraged recommendations to enhance both the electoral process and observation mission.

Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah briefed observers on the political context and NEC's deployment plan for electoral materials and security arrangements.

Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah praised the high profile of observers while stressing objectivity and impartiality during their mission duties. He also requested timely reports from field observations to contribute to the overall mission report.
