On January 7, 2025, the ECOWAS Commission's Department of Human Development and Social Affairs (HDSA), through the ECOWAS Gender Development Center (EGDC), held a consultation meeting to discuss the project for building a hygienic napkin and nappy manufacturing unit. The meeting took place in the conference room of Senegal's Ministry of Family and Solidarity.
The meeting was initiated by Pr Fatou Sow Sarr, Honourable Commissioner for HDSA of the ECOWAS Commission. She was accompanied by the Director of EGDC, Acting Director of Legal Affairs, and Director of Administration and General Services from the ECOWAS Commission.
Madame Maimouna Dieye, Minister for Family and Solidarity of Senegal, welcomed the ECOWAS delegation. She praised "the excellent cooperation with the ECOWAS Commission through the Gender Promotion and Women’s Empowerment programmes." The Minister emphasized Senegal's dedication to advancing women's progress.
Pr Fatou Sow Sarr presented her department’s new strategy aimed at creating a global ecosystem to enhance ECOWAS programs supporting gender equality and women’s empowerment. She also underscored "the project to build a sanitary napkin and nappy manufacturing unit in Senegal for schoolgirls and women suffering from obstetric fistula, as well as nappies for the elderly."
Following this audience, a technical meeting outlined guidelines and identified priorities crucial for ensuring this project's success. This initiative aims not only to improve access to feminine hygiene products but also to bolster local entrepreneurship.
During discussions, Senegal's Ministry for Family and Solidarity reiterated its commitment to backing this vital initiative aimed at improving women's well-being in Senegal.
