Fellow Gambians, friends, and residents of The Gambia were addressed by President Adama Barrow in his Christmas message delivered on December 24, 2024. As the year draws to a close, President Barrow emphasized the joy of the Christmas season and its significance beyond mere festivity.
"Christians would wisely remind us that Christmas is much more than a moment of merriment and festivity," he stated. The president highlighted the importance of reflecting on Jesus Christ's life and values during this period. He urged people to consider ethical values such as uprightness, piety, character formation, good neighborliness, and peaceful coexistence.
President Barrow expressed concern for regions like Gaza and the West Bank where peace is lacking. "It is a painful reminder that the birthplace of Jesus Christ...is marked by hardship and unrest," he noted. He encouraged serving humanity selflessly and uplifting those in need.
The president acknowledged the contributions of The Gambia's Christian community in education, health, and philanthropy. "I thank the Christian community for their civility and charitable acts around the country," he said.
Barrow pledged government support to all segments of Gambian society while urging cooperation to achieve national goals. He emphasized inclusive development based on citizenship and equal rights before the law.
In light of global conflicts and economic challenges, President Barrow advised sharing with neighbors, especially those who are sick or needy during Christmas. He called for vigilance to maintain safety: "Celebrate moderately and be vigilant to ensure that no one seizes the opportunity to break the law or harm any citizen."
He concluded his message by wishing everyone a merry Christmas while ensuring security services remain alert for public safety.
