The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, welcomed the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on December 11, 2024. The meeting took place at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The purpose of this visit was to enhance cooperation between ECOWAS and Germany. Accompanied by a delegation from the German government, President Steinmeier was received by Dr. Touray and Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Madame Damtien L. Tchintchibidja.
During discussions with ECOWAS officials, President Steinmeier acknowledged ECOWAS' accomplishments and commitment to its objectives. He assured that Germany and Europe would continue to support West Africa as partners who respect mutual choices.
Steinmeier urged the West African community to persist in efforts toward regional integration and solidarity: “only together can you build a West African house that can withstand all the multiple challenges of today.”
Dr. Touray commended the cooperation quality between ECOWAS and Germany based on shared peace, prosperity, and sustainable development goals for West Africa. He noted Germany's longstanding partnership since 1985 with around 495 million Euros in technical and financial cooperation.
“Germany’s multifaceted support has been decisive in implementing ECOWAS integration programs,” stated President Touray.
The collaboration focuses on peaceful communities building; climate and energy transition; sustainable economic development; training and employment; health; social protection; demographic policy.
Projects cover areas like organizational development, peacebuilding, migration management, technical assistance, industry/trade infrastructure enhancement, health through WAHO (West African Health Organization), energy solutions, and regional stabilization funds addressing vulnerabilities through socio-economic investments complemented by capacity building for governance improvement.
President Touray expressed gratitude towards Germany for its support in executing various projects/programs under ECOWAS’ framework while hoping this visit signifies an expanded cooperation phase benefiting from German expertise.
Other attendees included Mr. Sédiko Douka (Commissioner for Infrastructure), Mrs. Fatou Sow Sarr (Commissioner for Human Development), Mr. Abdou Kolley (Director of Cabinet), Mr. Jérôme Boa (Director of External Relations).
