The Chief Medical Officer has confirmed that two individuals have been hospitalized with malaria. They are receiving the necessary medical treatment. The cases are linked to recent travel to a high-risk malaria region. Public Health officials are keeping a close watch for any further cases.
"Important Note: Malaria is not contagious and there is no risk to anyone who has not travelled to a malarious area," stated the release. It added, "It is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito (of a type which is not found on St Helena)."
