President Bio receives 2024 Mental Health Report emphasizing national development

Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio has received the 2024 Mental Health Report at an official ceremony held at State House. The report was presented by Dr. Carol Labor, National Senior Advisor for Mental Health, who acknowledged the President's ongoing commitment to mental health initiatives in the country.

Dr. Labor highlighted the achievements of the Mental Health Secretariat since its inception in April 2023, attributing its success to President Bio's leadership. The Secretariat has been instrumental in capacity building and supporting over 1,000 individuals facing mental health challenges, including those affected by substance abuse and women living with HIV. Specialized programs have also been implemented for Kush ambassadors and individuals dealing with stress-related conditions. Advocacy efforts continue to reduce stigma and promote mental well-being across Sierra Leone.

During her presentation, Dr. Labor expressed gratitude for the government's support and emphasized the need for sustained resources to bolster the Secretariat's work.

President Bio reiterated his administration's dedication to mental health as a vital aspect of national development. He praised the Secretariat for its effective work and stressed the importance of collaboration with other state institutions to enhance success in this sector.

"The establishment of the Mental Health Secretariat was a key step in addressing the growing need for mental health support in Sierra Leone. I am proud of the progress made so far and encourage you to continue working in line with your mandate," stated President Bio.

He further assured continued support from his administration, highlighting mental health as essential for building a resilient and productive society.
