The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently organized a workshop in Lagos, Nigeria, to develop an E-Learning platform under the ECOWAS Agricultural Policy (ECOWAP). The event took place from November 11th to 15th, 2024. It aimed to provide rural African farmers with practical training and reliable information on effective farming techniques.
Approximately 30 experts and coordinators from the Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF) participated in this initiative. Their goal was to address knowledge gaps faced by underserved farming communities in West Africa.
Mr. Alan Sy Traore, Director of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized the importance of supporting farmers with access to knowledge, resources, and innovations. He stated that "farmers are the backbone of our economies" and highlighted the platform's potential to empower communities across the region.
Mr. Zongo, Acting Executive Director of RAAF, stressed that addressing information gaps is crucial for building resilient agricultural systems in West Africa. He noted that the platform would equip farmers with necessary knowledge to adapt and thrive.
Mrs. Fatmata L. SEIWOH, Programme Officer of ECOWAP/CAADP Monitoring and Evaluation, pointed out challenges faced by farmers due to lack of access to trustworthy information. She mentioned difficulties in maintaining soil health without understanding current techniques.
During the five-day workshop, participants conducted a needs assessment to align the platform’s design with user requirements such as those of farmers, agricultural extension officers, and policymakers. They also worked on content strategies tailored for diverse audiences.
A collaborative session defined the platform’s architecture and user interface focusing on ease of use and compatibility with existing ECOWAS systems. Sessions also covered data sharing and resource integration.
Experts recommended providing rural farmers with free or low-cost courses featuring video tutorials on practices like producing gari and tapioca facilitated by experienced instructors. Farmers will have options for certified courses through various mediums designed for small-scale operations.
The Acting Executive Director of RAAF expressed gratitude towards participants for their commitment during the workshop's conclusion. He conveyed confidence that this initiative would transform agriculture in West Africa by making knowledge accessible throughout the region.
