White Ribbon Day, observed globally on November 25, focuses on ending violence against women. This year's theme, "It Starts with Men," highlights the significant role men can play in preventing domestic abuse.
The Health and Social Care Portfolio has expressed its support for this cause and encourages participation from the St Helena community. Wearing a white ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a future without violence.
Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors by one partner to gain or maintain power over another intimate partner. It includes physical abuse like hitting or pushing, sexual abuse such as forcing unwanted acts, emotional abuse through insults or threats, economic abuse by controlling finances, and psychological abuse that undermines self-esteem.
Domestic violence affects individuals across all demographics and can have severe consequences for victims and their families.
The White Ribbon Working Group invites the public to join the White Walk on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:30. The walk will start at the General Hospital, move to Coleman House for a flag-raising ceremony, and end at Castle Gardens with the planting of a white rose bush as a symbol of hope.
