The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) conducted a mission from November 4 to 8, 2024, in Monrovia, Liberia. The purpose was to evaluate ECOWAS Radio's operations by examining its staff, premises, technical equipment, program content, and operational challenges.
The radio station faces several difficulties including maintaining technical equipment, deteriorating premises due to coastal erosion, limited staffing, financial constraints, and restricted regional programming. To understand these issues better, the mission held sessions with staff members and visited transmitter centers and broadcasting equipment. Meetings were also conducted with public and private broadcasting heads to compare operational practices.
Additionally, the mission inspected a new site intended for both the regional radio station and the ECOWAS Commission’s Resident Representative in Liberia. Two meetings were held with H.E. Mrs Joséphine Nkrumah, the Resident Representative of the Commission. These discussions focused on strategies to enhance the radio station's effectiveness.
ECOWAS Radio is designed as a tool for promoting peace, security, stability, and integration at a regional level by broadcasting information that raises awareness among West African citizens about various issues aligned with ECOWAS ideals.
