The President of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, attended the funeral of former Representative Johnson Naagon Gwaikolo at Tubman Memorial United Methodist Church in Paynesville. President Boakai described Gwaikolo as a "great statesman," emphasizing that his death is a significant loss to both his family and the nation.
During his tribute, President Boakai reflected on their relationship, which began in 1992 when they returned to Monrovia after hostilities ceased. He noted their involvement in the Movement for the Protection of Liberian Interests, where Gwaikolo was recognized as a commendable individual.
President Boakai praised Gwaikolo's contributions to Liberia and urged citizens to collaborate with the government for national progress. He offered condolences to Gwaikolo's family and Nimba County residents, praying for peace for the late lawmaker's soul.
Gwaikolo passed away on February 19, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital following a brief illness at age 68. Prior to the funeral, President Boakai visited Gwaikolo's home to express sympathy and signed a condolence book at the National Legislature.
