St Helena Government's Waste Management Services (WMS) has released an update regarding the fire at the Green Waste Cell located at Horse Point Landfill Site. The incident began on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, and efforts have been ongoing to control and extinguish the fire.

The strategy to address the situation involves collaboration with the Fire Service. "This involves moving large quantities of earth within the cell to smother the fire," WMS stated. Patrick Crowie, Landfill Manager, is working closely with the Fire Service to monitor for any potential escalation of the situation. Adjustments will be made as necessary in consultation with relevant authorities.

Environmental Risk Management has communicated with nearby businesses about the incident, ensuring them that effective management strategies are in place. WMS expressed gratitude towards various departments involved: "WMS would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Fire Service for their swift response and continued support in implementing the firefighting strategy." Additionally, thanks were extended to the Roads Section for their assistance.

As this remains an active situation, further updates will be provided as developments occur.
