On October 30, 2024, Dr. Melchior Athanase Joël C. Aissi, Director General of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), attended the inauguration ceremony of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) Hotel and Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. WAHO is a specialized agency of ECOWAS based in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, established in 1987 by the heads of state and government from fifteen ECOWAS member countries to provide high-level healthcare across the sub-region.

During the event, Dr. Aissi praised the WACP management for constructing this infrastructure aimed at professionals and individuals for accommodation and organizing various events such as seminars and conferences. He highlighted WACP's role in enhancing healthcare systems in West Africa.

“We will work to strengthen our collaboration and be assured that you will always have the support of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) through WAHO,” stated Dr. Melchior Athanase Joël C. Aissi.

He emphasized that WACP supplies health information to ECOWAS nations via WAHO and collaborates on policy development concerning postgraduate medical qualifications' harmonization.

This inauguration was part of the 48th Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM) of WACP, which started on October 28, 2024, focusing on "Strengthening Healthcare Systems in West Africa: Opportunities and Challenges."

Founded in 1976, WACP is committed to advancing medical education and practice within West Africa by promoting high standards for training and research. It serves as a health policy advisor to several regional governments. The college offers membership and fellowship status to qualified medical practitioners through its postgraduate training programs.
