His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio participated as a panelist in the 27th Commonwealth Business Forum 2024, held in Apia, Samoa. During the discussion titled “Connecting the Commonwealth,” President Bio expressed his government's belief that technology is an effective means to combat corruption.

The panel included Lord Maryland of Odstock, chairman of CWEIC, and Lauren Dreyer, vice president of Starlink. The forum was organized in partnership with BSP Financial Group Limited and moderated by Richard Griffiths from Arentfox Schiff LLP.

President Bio confirmed that Starlink has been expanding internet connectivity across Sierra Leone. He described Starlink as a “revolutionary and viable tool” for improving internet connectivity and recommended their facility to others. He noted that Sierra Leone has been utilizing fiber optic connections in nearly all districts, aiming for nationwide connectivity.

As one of the low-income countries, President Bio emphasized the need for technological advancements. "We believed that technology is a viable solution to combat corruption by reducing cash transactions," he stated, adding that it would also improve healthcare, education, and agriculture.

Lauren Dreyer thanked President Bio’s government for accepting Starlink and informed the forum about their plans to establish businesses in various countries. She highlighted their focus on registration and operational setup, noting that their services cater to diverse groups.

Richard Griffiths commended President Bio for his commitment to advancing technology in Sierra Leone. He praised the transition from fiber optics to Starlink as a move towards inclusivity and transparency.

The event followed other engagements by President Bio during his visit to Samoa and discussions with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs en route to Samoa.
