The Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) conducted its 2024 lecture on October 8 at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. The event, themed “Consolidating Democracy and Integration in ECOWAS: the Journey So Far,” featured a lecture by H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, H.E. Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, chaired the event and emphasized ECOWAS' critical role in fostering regional integration and promoting democratic governance among member states.
Dr. Omar Alieu Touray addressed attendees on various topics, including the vision set by ECOWAS' founding fathers and the successes achieved in integration, peace, security, and governance. He also discussed current challenges faced by the Commission and highlighted future initiatives like ECOWAS Vision 2050, a single currency plan, and major infrastructure and energy projects aimed at enhancing prosperity for citizens across member states.
The lecture drew attendance from accredited ambassadors in Nigeria, former Nigerian ambassadors plenipotentiary and extraordinary, students from various universities in Abuja, among other guests.
