Road Infrastructure Ministers of the five Corridor Member Countries of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project, implemented by the ECOWAS Commission, have reaffirmed their support for the project. They also encouraged speeding up processes leading to the construction phase.
This message was conveyed at their 21st Project Ministerial Steering Committee Meeting organized by the ECOWAS Commission in Lagos, Nigeria. The meeting included project Ministers from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.
Mr. Sediko Douka, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization of the ECOWAS Commission, welcomed newly appointed Ministers from Ghana and Togo to their first Project Steering Committee meeting. He emphasized the project's role in eliminating tariff barriers and promoting free movement across the region. Mr. Douka also thanked Côte d’Ivoire for hosting facilities for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Management Authority (ALCoMA) and reiterated commitment to accelerating ALCOMA's operationalization.
A representative from the African Development Bank (AfDB) expressed gratitude to ECOWAS for its leadership in driving the project. The representative highlighted AfDB’s commitment to resource mobilization for highway construction and urged fast-tracking study completions to enable financing and procurement.
The Honourable Ministers underscored their Governments' strong commitment to implementing the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Project, noting its strategic significance for regional economic transformation. They acknowledged progress in technical studies and ALCOMA's commencement while reaffirming commitment to its establishment.
Under Sen. Engr David Umahi’s chairmanship, Nigerian Minister of Works, Ministers noted Member States' progress in protecting Right of Way reservations and stressed resolving remaining barriers quickly. They called on ECOWAS to ensure Consultants submit Revised Engineering Design Reports by December 2024 as agreed at a technical validation workshop.
The next Steering Committee meeting is scheduled for December 2024 in Togo.
