The ECOWAS Commission has donated N640 million to Nigeria to support victims of flood disasters in Borno and Bauchi states, North-East Nigeria. The donation includes N320 million each for Borno and Bauchi states.
Prof. Fatou Sow SARR, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, announced the donation on behalf of Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during a visit to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Abuja on September 26, 2024.
During the visit, Prof. SARR extended condolences from Dr. TOURAY to Nigerian President Ahmed Bola TINUBU and all Nigerians affected by recent floods that resulted in loss of life, displacement of populations, and destruction of property worth trillions of Naira.
She commended President TINUBU's government for its prompt response to the disaster and ongoing humanitarian efforts. Prof. SARR noted that extreme weather conditions due to climate change have impacted the ECOWAS region significantly over the years.
“The ECOWAS Commission stands firmly with the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in these difficult periods,” she said. “To demonstrate our solidarity...the ECOWAS Commission is donating...N320 million...for assistance to the victims of the flood in Borno State, and...N320 million...for assistance to the victims of the flood in Bauchi State.”
Permanent Secretary Mr. Abel Enitan thanked ECOWAS for its support and assured that the donations would be used effectively to aid flood victims in Borno and Bauchi states.
“On behalf of the President...I want to most honourably and sincerely thank...ECOWAS for its magnanimity,” Enitan said.
