The President of the Republic of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has called on the international community to support Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term. This appeal was made during his address at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

President Boakai emphasized Liberia’s historical role as a founding member of both the United Nations and its predecessor, the League of Nations. He detailed Liberia's ongoing contributions to peace, security, and human dignity—principles that are integral to the country's Constitution and its active participation in global affairs.

“Liberia’s history is closely intertwined with the ideals of the United Nations. Our commitment to fostering peace, resolving conflicts, and advocating for self-determination across Africa is well documented,” said President Boakai.

He highlighted Liberia's involvement in key continental and regional organizations such as the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Mano River Union (MRU). These organizations have been instrumental in promoting cooperation, peace, and development across Africa.

Reflecting on Liberia’s past civil conflicts, President Boakai noted that overcoming these challenges has provided valuable insights into peacebuilding and conflict resolution. “Liberia’s experience in overcoming conflict equips us with unique insights into peacebuilding and conflict resolution, making us well positioned to contribute meaningfully to the Security Council’s work.”

President Boakai also pointed out that Liberia's priorities align with broader international goals concerning climate change, regional security, and sustainable development. He affirmed Liberia's dedication to multilateralism and inclusion in global decision-making processes.

“As a member of the Security Council, Liberia will bring a perspective shaped by our history along with our unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in the UN Charter,” he stated.

In concluding his speech, President Boakai sought support from UN member states for Liberia’s candidacy while emphasizing its readiness to contribute significantly to global peace, security, and governance.
