Lagos, 20 September 2024 – The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), in collaboration with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), hosted a regional workshop on green hydrogen for private sector players in the ECOWAS region. The event took place from 19 to 20 September 2024 in Lagos, Nigeria.
The seminar focused on providing an understanding of green hydrogen and green ammonia production technologies. It also addressed key challenges, opportunities, economics, and risks associated with the sector. The workshop targeted private sector entities involved in hydrogen-demanding industries within the ECOWAS region.
The primary goal was to raise awareness among private sector participants about the significant opportunities presented by green hydrogen, especially for decarbonisation in energy-intensive industries. Attendees received information on production techniques, applications, and the commercial potential of green hydrogen in West Africa.
This initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Strategic and Policy Framework. The framework aims to position the region as a competitive producer and supplier of green hydrogen and its derivatives while promoting socio-economic growth and sustainable development across all Member States. The goal is to achieve regional production of at least 0.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030 and at least 10 million tonnes by 2050.
The seminar attracted participants from various sectors including oil and gas, fertilisers, cement, steel, and transport within ECOWAS. Additionally, members of green hydrogen associations, production companies, and other strategic partners attended. The workshop offered a platform for networking and sharing best practices for adopting and expanding green hydrogen use in the region.
