The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through its specialized institution, the West African Health Organization (WAHO), in partnership with the Cabo Verdean Association for the Protection of the Family (VERDEFAM), launched the “Project for the Protection of the Health of Young People, Especially Girls” in Praia. The event took place at Domingos Ramos High School and included young attendees to understand the initiative better.
This project will be implemented on Santiago Island in Praia, Santa Catarina, and Tarrafal. It aims to improve young people's health, focusing on girls by promoting access to sexual and reproductive health services such as family planning, pregnancy tests, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and specialized medical consultations in gynecology and obstetrics.
At the launch ceremony, Mr. Francis Sempore, Acting Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, praised WAHO's role in raising health standards in the sub-region. He noted that this initiative is one among many interventions aimed at protecting young people's health.
Dr. Ângela Gomes, National Health Director, highlighted ECOWAS’ strong partnership and contribution to strengthening health initiatives over recent years. She also addressed youth about making well-informed decisions within the project's scope.
The project will last four months and aims to provide quality services and information to young people. This will enable them to make informed decisions and adopt responsible attitudes and behaviors complementing efforts by competent authorities.
This initiative is part of ECOWAS’s ongoing efforts to improve public health in the region and strengthen young people's health. It also aligns with VERDEFAM’s mission to promote Cabo Verdean family rights concerning sexual and reproductive health.
